Dissertation Proposal + Abstract

Proposal title
Are our social skills negatively affected by the use of social networking sites? And will this affect continue to the future generation?

Outline of Dissertation
As technology continues to develop at a rapid speed, social networks are increasing in popularity. How are these modifications in technology on the web and the power of networking sites altering the social lives and social skills of the users and what effect will this have on future generations? In today’s society the top five social networking sites have more than one hundred million users, who are logging onto these sites constantly. With this in mind, does this illustrate that the public are relying too much on this type of technology and community areas by integrating them into their everyday life? Or do the public realize the implications of the information held on these sites and who can access them?
My main aim is to research into the reasons behind why the public are constantly drawn into these sites, which include Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Furthermore, how have these sites become so addictive, effecting it’s users in a way that encourages repetitive use. I will also be focusing on why users rely on social networking sites so much, and the important issues that are not taken into consideration, such as identity theft, the unknown people we are contacting over these sites, and whether users are aware of these dangers.

One of the main reasons for exploring this subject is to discover why the public, not so much depend on, but constantly choose the use of social networking sites over social interaction, such as making a phone call to talk to someone or meeting someone in person. I strongly believe that social networks are taking part in everyone’s daily lives, because of this I feel that the use of social skills and social lives are being affected in a big way.
This dissertation will portray the importance of these concerns, document all of the issues that surround social networks and investigate any other information concealed beneath the social networking sites trying to gather all the relative information to prove the discussion is a correct statement.
